Why Western Australia
A different ocean from the east coast, and it behaves differently. Where the Gold Coast waits on Tasman lows and tropical cyclones, the Margaret River region faces the Southern Ocean and takes SW–W groundswell nearly year-round, across more than seventy-five breaks in about 130 km of coast.
Main Break, off the point at Prevelly, is the wave the region is known for: an A-frame reef with peeling lefts and rights, faces from 5 to 20 feet, and the site of the Margaret River Pro. It is an advanced wave and should be read as one.
When to go
- Mar–May and Sep–Nov — autumn and spring — are the best all-round windows, and they are what the months above reflect. Solid SW–W groundswell with the easterly offshores that groom it, without the storminess of deep winter.
- Jun–Aug brings the biggest and most consistent swell of the year, and also the wettest and least forgiving conditions. Strong surfers come then on purpose.
- Dec–Feb is the mildest and the most likely to be small; Yallingup in particular tends toward flat through summer.
Sources disagree about the best season here more than anywhere else in this atlas, and it is worth knowing why: they are answering different questions. Tourism Western Australia points at September–April, which is a weather-and-events answer. Surf-specific guides point at winter, which is a raw-swell answer. The months above are the compromise most useful to somebody booking lessons.
What to expect
Every listing here is a surf school rather than a stay-camp, and that is an accurate picture of the region rather than a gap in our coverage. In Margaret River, lodging and surf instruction are separate businesses: you book a house, a cabin or a caravan park in Prevelly, Yallingup or Margaret River town, and you book lessons separately.
Getting around
Fly into Perth (PER) and drive — Margaret River is about three hours south. Busselton (BQB) is closer, with limited flights. A car is not optional here: the breaks are spread across 130 km and there is no useful transport between them.
