Margaret River Main Break
The wave Western Australia is known for, and the site of the Margaret River Pro. Swell refracts off deep water on either side of the point and focuses onto a shallow reef, producing an A-frame with lefts and rights that its Surfline mechanics write-up records holding faces from 5 to 20 feet. It wants SW to W swell — too much south in it and the lefts break out to sea while the rights section — with calm conditions or an easterly offshore, straight east being dead offshore. Good on all tides depending on size, best on mid to incoming. It receives good surf year-round and is at its best in autumn and spring, which is what this region's months reflect.

An advanced reef break with a heavy, focused peak, serious size range and shallow rock underneath — graded from Level 5 and honestly closer to a Level 6 wave most days it is worth surfing. The Margaret River schools all teach elsewhere: on the beginner sand at Prevelly below this same headland, or at Redgate down the coast. Watching Main Break from the Surfers Point car park is part of a trip here; paddling out is a separate decision that should follow a lot of reef experience.
