Praia das Toninhas
Ubatuba's most learner-friendly beach and its main teaching wave — a 'democratic' beach with several sand-bottom peaks spread along it, so beginners can sit where the swell comes in softest while stronger surfers find punchier peaks nearby. The right-hand end of the beach tends to have the smaller, mellower waves; the left half picks up more size and can turn hollow when an E swell fills in. Works on most swells above chest-high through all tides, and a surf school operates right on the sand. Winter brings the most consistent conditions.

One of the best places to learn in Ubatuba — multiple peaks mean space away from the crowd, and the inside reforms are gentle. On bigger E swells the left half gets powerful and hollow, so beginners should stay on the smaller right-hand side and the whitewater, ideally with the on-beach school. Watch for rip currents and murky water after heavy rain.
Hazards
- rip currents
- crowds on the best days
- runoff after heavy rain
