Praia dos Naufragados
The wave at the southern tip of the island, below the lighthouse, reached by a forty-five-minute walk through Atlantic forest or by boat. It faces the open ocean and wants a straight southerly swell with N/NW offshore behind it, which is an autumn and winter combination rather than a summer one. When it lines up it is fast and hollow, and the crowd is whoever else was willing to make the walk.

Find my Level →Beginner notes
The wrong beach to learn on and one of the worst on the island to get it wrong at. The wave is fast and it tubes; the access means a difficult session ends with a long walk rather than a short one, and there is no lifeguard and no easy way to summon help. This is a spot for surfers already comfortable in powerful, hollow beach break.
Hazards
- 45-minute forest trail or boat access only
- fast, heavy tubes
- no lifeguard cover
- remote — help is a long way off
- exposed to open ocean south swell
