Praia do Moçambique
The island's longest beach — roughly twelve kilometres of undeveloped sand running inside a state park — and the place to go when the east coast is crowded. Access is by trail through the dunes and forest, which is exactly why the peaks are empty: the walk filters the lineup better than any localism does. The wave is a heavy, open beach break with banks that shift along its length, so the surf is a matter of walking until you find the one that is working. It takes the same S/SE winter groundswell as Joaquina and Mole and holds size well after they have closed out.

The wrong beach to learn on, for reasons that have nothing to do with the wave's shape. Moçambique is remote and largely unpatrolled, the rips are strong and there is nobody to notice if you are in one; the nearest help can be a long walk away. Improvers and up, ideally not alone, and check the forecast before committing to the walk in.
