Cox Bay
The main teaching beach on the Tofino coast and the most consistent of them — its forecast guide calls it an exposed beach and point break with pretty consistent surf, working best on a west swell with an easterly offshore, and rideable at all stages of the tide. It is a wide, sandy, gently-shelving bay with lefts and rights and enough room that the crowd spreads out. Most Tofino lessons happen here or at Chesterman, and the choice between them is made on the morning's forecast rather than by preference.

A genuine Level 1 wave: sand bottom, no reef, a long forgiving inside, and a local scene with none of the territoriality that makes a good beginner wave unusable elsewhere. The hazards that matter here are not the wave. Rip currents run on bigger days, and the water is cold enough to be the limiting factor on any session — about 14°C at its warmest in August and 7°C in February. Take a lesson, or at minimum rent the right wetsuit; every school here supplies one for the season.
