Cloud 9

Siargao, Philippines9.815° 126.165°
Levels 5-7Typical size: 312 ft

The wave that put the Philippines on the map. A thick, hollow right-hand reef break that throws a postcard barrel over sharp coral, with a shorter left peeling off the same peak. The wooden boardwalk and tower out to the lineup are a Siargao landmark. On a clean NE swell with offshore SW wind it's one of the best barrels in Southeast Asia.

Beginner notes

Not a beginner wave. Below Level 5, watch from the boardwalk and surf Jacking Horse instead. The reef is shallow and unforgiving at low tide — booties on, and respect the pecking order in a busy lineup.

Hazards

  • shallow reef
  • sharp coral
  • crowd
  • strong currents on big days
