Supertubes at Jeffreys Bay is, by common consent, one of the two or three best right-hand point breaks in the world — long, fast, hollow, and mechanically perfect on the right swell. It is also crowded, competitive, and unforgiving of people who shouldn't be out there.

What makes J-Bay work as a trip, though, is the range within one bay:

When to go

• **Apr–Sep (austral winter):** the season. Groundswell from the Southern Ocean, offshore winds, and when Supertubes does what it's famous for. Getting around

Fly into Port Elizabeth / Gqeberha (PLZ) — J-Bay is about an hour's drive, and most lodges include the transfer. Cape Town is a long way west (roughly eight hours), so don't plan to combine them casually. Watch for the sharks conversation: it's real, it's managed, and the local advice is worth taking seriously.
