A lessons-only school on Playa Avellanas, included here because it does the two things the rest of this beach mostly does not: it names its prices and it names its qualifications. A private lesson is US$85 per person and a group or kids' lesson US$70, in colones as well as dollars, and the instructors are certified by the International Surf Association and in ILS water safety. Teaching is pitched at beginners, children and surfers rebuilding a foundation, on a beach whose sandy-bottom peaks suit exactly that. There is no accommodation: the school lists nearby guesthouses, villas and vacation rentals as partners, none of which it runs, so a week here means booking a bed separately.
